Scans with the Artist in Mind
Traditionally artists have captured images of the works in their portfolio for posterity, a personal record, and for submissions to judged competitions. For works created prior to the current digital standard, these images were often captured on slide film.
Rather than converting your portfolio record to digital in a costly one-off process as needed, PhotoFresh USA can convert your entire collection to digital format through our personalized Art Services program.
Our personalized program involves three steps:
► Setup: Recognizing that many artists take multiple slides of each work, we provide guidelines for selecting the best slide for each piece, helping you to maximize the quality of the final product. We also work with you to establish your individual requirements.
► Scanning and Processing: We physically remove any dust from the slide, abiding by our no-touch policy to prevent any degradation of the original slide. We scan your works at 4000 dpi (dots-per-inch) in order to capture as much data from the original as possible—data which lower scan rates could compromise. Scans are captured in the TIFF format, which generates the highest quality output. We electronically orient the image to correct for alignment errors when the original slides were taken; even a 1 degree rotation of an image can detract from its impact. We will not correct for any color, brightness or contrast issues in this phase. We crop the image, providing a border where possible, striving to capture 100% of your original work. We save the finished scan in the TIFF format. We also generate a JPEG format image of the highest quality possible, as compression could result in loss of detail. Having both formats will allow you the greatest flexibility now and in the future, for whatever use you may have for your images.
► Post-processing Review: We will meet with you to review the final product for your approval, at which time the final DVD's or CD's and your original slides will be turned over to you.
The price for this premium service is $1.25 per slide, with a $25.00 minimum.
Unfortunately, no collection of slides will be entirely pristine. The pre-scan setup will identify many problems. Sadly, some slides will not perfectly reflect the original work. Some degradation of the slide over time can be adjusted easily, such as correcting for brightness. Scratches can be touched up, but usually at the cost of losing some detail in the image. Color shifting caused by time, shortcomings in the original film medium or the lighting when the photo was taken are more problematic. We offer a face-to-face consultation during which you can direct us to make specific changes, at a rate of $30 per hour. There is a $45.00 minimum charge for this service.
Our overall goal is to generate scans that reflect the qualities of your original works, to your full satisfaction. We hope you will consider PhotoFresh USA when bringing your portfolio into the digital age.
At PhotoFresh USA we recognize the special requirements of artists. You are rightly proud and possessive of the works you have produced, and won't accept modifications to your art in any way. The scans must reflect as accurately as possible the original work of art.
The works of North Carolina pastelist Toni Lindahl have appeared in exhibitions across the USA and have been featured in international arts magazines. Ms. Lindahl contracted with PhotoFresh USA to scan her portfolio for her website. The scans were made from 35 mm slides. To see the results, click here (opens a new window).
